SAN MARCOS, Texas, April 19, 2012- The San Marcos Animal Shelter is offering Kind News through its Adopt-A-Classroom program as part of its youth outreach and education efforts.
“We are sending out letters and donations specifically for this program to sponsor subscriptions for students in elementary schools,” said Kara Montiel, animal shelter supervisor.
Kind News is published by the Humane Society of the United States and is the most widely used humane education resource. Children learn the value of kindness toward one another, animals and the environment through this award-winning newspaper.

Samples and reviews can be viewed at www.kindness.org/aboutmenu.asp.
A classroom can be adopted by contacting San Marcos Animal Services at 512-805-2650 or by sending a donation of $30 per classroom to 630 E. Hopkins, San Marcos, TX 78666. San Marcos Mutt Strutt Welcomes Pet Owners

SAN MARCOS, Texas, April 19, 2012 – The San Marcos Animal Shelter will host the ninth annual Mutt Strutt one-mile walk to benefit homeless pets in the city on April 21.
The public event will be at the San Marcos Plaza Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. for an advanced cost of $15 and a same-day fee of $20.
Residents are welcome to take part in live music, door prizes and a silent auction. Owners are welcome to enter their pets into a variety of contests including best costume, owner dog look-alike and best trick.
Participants will receive a free T-shirt and goodie bag. Starbucks, Krispy Kreme and Austin Scoops are sponsoring the event and will offer free coffee, donuts and frozen dog treats for attendees.
The Mutt Strutt sponsors a Guardian Angel pet program. Citizens can pick an adoptable animal and donate money towards the $90 pet adoption cost. The donor’s name will be placed on a certificate and will encourage the adoption of the pet due to a lower fee.
“We take a lot of our adoptable dogs out and have volunteers do the walk with them and hang out in the park,” said Kara Montiel, animal shelter supervisor. “We promote adoptions to the public and it’s a good place for people to have their pets interact with our pets if they are considering adoption. It’s a fundraiser for our shelter and everything goes to our adoption program.”
“Mutt Strutt, last year, raised almost $6,000 for us so we had that money, said Bert Stratemann, animal services manager. That $6,000 helped pay for Spay Day and the $4,600 discount we had for adoptions on that week.”
The San Marcos Animal Shelter accepts lost, found and unwanted animals from the cities of San Marcos and Kyle within Hays County. A staff of 16 people helps operate the shelter, and volunteers are welcomed. The shelter receives limited funding from the city and encourages adoptions and donations to maintain clean and safe facilities.
